IP2Location is an IP geolocation database and API built since 2002 by Malaysia's Hexasoft Development, aimed at businesses that need to target content, verify a payment's location, screen for fraud, or block proxies and VPNs from an IP address alone. Its catalogue runs from DB1, which resolves only the country, up to DB24, with over twenty attributes covering region, city, coordinates, time zone, ISP, domain, connection speed, mobile carrier, weather station and elevation. The best-known product in the line-up is IP2Proxy, a dedicated database that flags VPNs, Tor exit nodes, data centres, public and web proxies and crawlers, refreshed daily.
Unlike MaxMind or DB-IP, IP2Location publishes no numerical accuracy breakdown by country or city: it describes its data as "accurate and comprehensive" and its VPN detection as "tested and verified by a third party", without figures to back either claim. Packages DB1 through DB18 carry list prices (from 99 USD a year); anything from DB19 up requires a quote, and an IP2Proxy site licence runs to 15,980 USD a year. Buyers who would rather not pay can use IP2Location LITE, a free downloadable edition that requires attribution and that the vendor itself describes as having "limited accuracy", or the free tier of the IP2Location.io API, capped at 50,000 queries a month. The company states it complies with the GDPR and has appointed EU and UK representatives.
