DB-IP review

IP data

French IP geolocation provider offering a free Creative Commons database alongside more accurate commercial editions.

  • Claimed accuracyThe provider does not publish an accuracy percentage; it uses its own internal "accuracy index" (77 for the free City Lite database versus 96 for the commercial IP to Location), and states in its FAQ that actual accuracy "depends on many factors, especially the ISP": sometimes at street level, in most cases at city level, and only at country level in the worst cases.
  • Update frequencymonthly (explicitly stated for the Lite databases; the paid databases only show a last-updated date, with no explicit cadence)

DB-IP publishes its prices in euros, not dollars: the Starter API plan is €8.29/month for 2,000 to 50,000 daily requests, and the next one up, Premium, is €99.90/month. The downloadable database is billed separately. Checked on db-ip.com/api on 11-09-2026, where no dollar figure appears at all.

DB-IP is a French provider, run by Eris Networks and based in Perros-Guirec, that geolocates IPv4 and IPv6 addresses by combining data from access providers, more than 215,000 cities, and its own machine-learning models. It sells four downloadable databases (country, country plus location, ISP, and a combined location-and-ISP package) and an API with plans tiered by daily query volume that, beyond country, region and city, adds currency, time zone, autonomous system number, carrier and connection type, weather station data, and a threat score flagging anonymous proxies and bots.

DB-IP does not quote an accuracy percentage: it uses an internal "accuracy index" that puts the free City Lite database at 77 against 96 for the commercial IP to Location edition, and acknowledges that real precision depends on the access provider, sometimes street-level, mostly city-level, and country-level only in the worst cases. The three Lite databases (country, city and ASN) are released under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, which requires crediting DB-IP and, on a website, linking back wherever the results are displayed. The cheapest API plan costs €8.29 a month; the paid country database costs €49.90 a year on top of that. Its privacy policy recognises rights for European residents but never names the GDPR outright.

Why two sites place your IP in different cities

Of six IP geolocation providers, only one publishes a measured accuracy figure by country. The rest use adjectives. Here is what the data actually says, and what to ask before choosing one.
