Balancer V2 is a generalized automated market maker launched in May 2021 that extends the AMM concept far beyond the traditional 50/50 token pair model. Developed by Fernando Martinelli and the Balancer Labs team, Balancer allows pool creators to design pools containing 2 to 8 tokens at any custom weight distribution — for example, an 80/20 ETH/USDC pool or a multi-token index fund with precise target allocations. This flexibility transforms Balancer from a simple exchange into a programmable portfolio management protocol where liquidity providers are also passive index fund managers.

Balancer V2 introduced a significant architectural upgrade: the Protocol Vault. Rather than each pool holding its own tokens, all Balancer pools share a single vault contract that holds all assets. This vault architecture dramatically reduces gas costs for multi-hop swaps (since tokens move only within the vault), enables gas-efficient internal balancing operations, and makes flash loans available across all assets in all pools simultaneously. The Vault also enables "batch swaps," where complex multi-pool routes are computed and settled atomically.

The BAL governance token allows holders to vote on protocol parameters, fee distributions, and the allocation of BAL liquidity mining rewards across pools. Balancer has developed a sophisticated gauge system (inspired by Curve) that lets veBAL holders (users who lock 80/20 BAL/ETH BPT) direct emissions to specific pools, creating a metagame around liquidity incentivization similar to the Curve Wars. This has made Balancer a preferred venue for protocols seeking to bootstrap liquidity for new token pairs.

A flagship Balancer V2 innovation is Boosted Pools. These pools allow idle capital within a Balancer pool to be deployed into external yield protocols such as Aave or Yearn, generating additional return for liquidity providers without disrupting the pool's trading function. The bb-a-USD pool (Boosted Balancer Aave USD), combining USDC, USDT, and DAI with Aave yield, exemplified this concept and attracted substantial TVL.
