The $1.99/month figure is the Starter plan prepaid for a 4-year term ($95.52 upfront); billed monthly, Starter actually starts at $9.99/month, and every price renews at the standard rate once the promotional term ends.
hosting.com is a managed, cPanel-based hosting provider aimed at people who want a website (or several) without running the server themselves: shared hosting across three tiers (Starter, Pro, Max), managed or unmanaged VPS, bare-metal dedicated servers, managed WordPress hosting, and cPanel reseller hosting with WHM.
The brand is not simply A2 Hosting under a new name: it is the merger of A2 Hosting (founded 2003 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) with World Host Group's portfolio of brands, plus the acquisition of Rocket.net for managed WordPress. a2hosting.com now redirects straight to the hosting.com homepage and keeps no page of its own. What does survive from A2 is the "Turbo" branding itself — NVMe storage plus LiteSpeed caching — still advertised by name on the shared and VPS plans. The managed WordPress plan, by contrast, runs on infrastructure inherited from Rocket.net, with Cloudflare Enterprise CDN, WP Rocket and Object Cache Pro bundled in, none of which appears on the rest of the lineup.
The money-back guarantee is 30 days, but the company's own terms explicitly exclude domain registrations and bespoke dedicated servers from it, along with setup and migration fees. Uptime is marketed as 99.9% on most pages, though the official plan-comparison table promises 99.95% for those same plans. Backups run daily with 30-day retention and self-service restore. Bare-metal dedicated servers are only confirmed in stock in Dallas, Texas, with "10+ global locations" offered on request without saying which ones.

Why Cheap Hosting Costs More at Renewal
The advertised price covers the first term, and usually means prepaying years upfront; renewal is charged at list price. The figures from several providers, and the three cases that break the pattern.
