A satoshi is the smallest unit into which a bitcoin can be divided: it equals one hundred-millionth of 1 BTC. In everyday use it is called a sat, sats in the plural. In other words, 1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis and 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC.
To convert satoshis to bitcoin, divide by 100,000,000; to convert bitcoin to satoshis, multiply by 100,000,000. Some examples:
When converting bitcoin to satoshis produces a result with decimals — because more than 8 decimal places of BTC were entered — the calculator rounds to the nearest whole satoshi, since there is no smaller unit than the satoshi on the Bitcoin main network.
The 8-decimal limit is not an interface choice: it comes from the reference software itself. In the Bitcoin Core source code, amounts are handled internally as whole numbers of satoshis, not as fractions of BTC. The constant COIN, defined in src/consensus/amount.h, sets that value at 100000000: for the program, each bitcoin is one hundred million whole units. That is why a BTC amount with more than 8 decimals would not correspond to a whole number of satoshis.

On the main Bitcoin chain the satoshi is indivisible: there is no smaller unit of account within an on-chain transaction. The Lightning Network, on the other hand, does work with a smaller unit to calculate fees and internal channel balances, the millisatoshi (msat), where 1 satoshi equals 1,000 millisatoshis; the BOLT specifications that define Lightning use this unit in fields such as amount_msat, although those fractional amounts only exist within channels and cannot be settled separately on the main chain.
The Bitcoin Core code itself also sets, as a protocol sanity limit, a maximum of 21,000,000 BTC — that is, 2,100,000,000,000,000 satoshis — through the constant MAX_MONEY: no valid amount can exceed it. This is a validity check, not the exact number of bitcoins that will ever circulate, which depends on the block reward schedule. Finally, when converting from bitcoin to satoshi, this calculator always returns a whole number, with no decimals, because a satoshi cannot be fractioned.
