Uniswap V2 is the landmark AMM protocol launched in May 2020 that revolutionized decentralized trading on Ethereum. Developed by Hayden Adams and the Uniswap team, V2 improved upon the original Uniswap by enabling direct ERC-20 to ERC-20 token swaps without requiring ETH as an intermediary, dramatically expanding the number of possible trading pairs and reducing swap costs. At its peak in 2020–2021, Uniswap V2 was the dominant DEX globally and a defining pillar of DeFi Summer.

The core mechanism of Uniswap V2 is the constant product formula x*y=k, where x and y are the reserves of two tokens in a liquidity pool and k is a constant value. Any trade that changes the ratio of reserves automatically adjusts the price, ensuring the pool never runs out of either token. This elegant simplicity made Uniswap V2 easy to understand, audit, and build upon, leading to an explosion of forks and integrations across the DeFi ecosystem.

Every liquidity pool on Uniswap V2 charges a flat 0.30% fee on all swaps, which is distributed proportionally among liquidity providers as yield for their capital. Any user can create a new liquidity pool for any ERC-20 token pair permissionlessly, making Uniswap V2 the first venue where many new tokens achieve initial liquidity. V2 also introduced flash swaps, enabling users to borrow any token from a pool within a single transaction without upfront capital, provided the loan is repaid by the end of the transaction.

Although Uniswap V3 has surpassed V2 in volume efficiency, V2 remains heavily used for long-tail tokens and by protocols that prefer its simpler LP token standard. Many DeFi aggregators, lending protocols, and yield farms continue to integrate V2 pools due to their composability and fungible LP tokens (ERC-20), which are easier to use as collateral than V3's NFT positions.
