SushiSwap is a community-driven decentralized exchange that began as a controversial fork of Uniswap V2 in August 2020, created by an anonymous developer known as "Chef Nomi." The initial launch was notorious for its "vampire attack" strategy, in which the protocol offered SUSHI token rewards to Uniswap LPs who migrated their liquidity to SushiSwap. In a dramatic two-week period, SushiSwap attracted over $1 billion in liquidity before transitioning to a fully independent protocol, ultimately becoming one of the most widely used DEXs in DeFi.

Unlike Uniswap, SushiSwap directed a portion of trading fees directly to token holders: 0.25% of the 0.30% swap fee goes to liquidity providers, while 0.05% is collected as protocol revenue and distributed to xSUSHI stakers — users who have staked their SUSHI tokens in the SushiBar. This revenue-sharing model gave SUSHI genuine fundamental value and established a blueprint for value accrual in DeFi governance tokens.

SushiSwap evolved well beyond its AMM roots into a full-spectrum DeFi suite. The platform expanded to include Kashi, a lending and borrowing protocol based on isolated lending pairs; MISO, a launchpad for new token offerings; and Trident, an advanced multi-pool AMM framework supporting concentrated liquidity (CLMM), hybrid, and stable pool types. SushiSwap deployed on over 20 blockchain networks including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Fantom, BSC, and others, becoming one of the most multichain DEX protocols in DeFi.

The SUSHI token serves as both a governance token (used to vote on protocol direction, fee allocation, and upgrades) and a yield-bearing asset when staked as xSUSHI. Token holders have historically received a share of all trading fees generated across all SushiSwap deployments. The protocol launched the SUSHI Merkle reward system to distribute emissions efficiently across its many chain deployments.

Despite leadership changes and community turbulence over the years — including controversy surrounding Chef Nomi's initial actions and multiple subsequent governance restructurings — SushiSwap has maintained a dedicated community and continued development. The protocol's multichain presence, established brand, and deep liquidity on Ethereum and major L2s keep it relevant as one of the original and most recognized names in decentralized exchange.
