Loopring is a pioneering Layer 2 decentralized exchange and payment protocol built on Ethereum, founded in 2017 by Daniel Wang, a former Google engineer. Loopring was among the first protocols to successfully implement zkRollup technology for DEX trading, enabling non-custodial trading with near-zero fees and Ethereum-level security. The protocol's core insight was that on-chain settlement could be made orders of magnitude cheaper by batching thousands of transactions together and proving their validity with a single zero-knowledge proof submitted to Ethereum mainnet.

Loopring supports two trading mechanisms: an order book model similar to traditional exchange matching engines, and an AMM model for automated liquidity provision. The order book matches maker and taker orders off-chain through Loopring's relay network, with final settlement on Ethereum secured by ZK proofs — meaning users retain custody of their assets at all times and can withdraw to mainnet without the relay's cooperation if needed (the "escape hatch" property). The AMM pools allow anyone to provide liquidity and earn fees on trades, similar to Uniswap-style AMMs but on L2.

The LRC (Loopring Token) serves as the protocol's staking and governance token. Exchange operators who use Loopring's zkRollup technology are required to stake LRC as collateral, creating demand for the token relative to exchange activity. LRC stakers share in a portion of the protocol fees collected across all Loopring-powered exchanges. Governance votes on protocol upgrades, fee parameters, and technology roadmap are conducted by LRC holders.

Loopring also provides a non-custodial smart wallet product (Loopring Wallet), which uses social recovery — allowing users to designate trusted guardians who can help recover wallet access without seed phrases — and account abstraction features that make the wallet experience more user-friendly than traditional Ethereum wallets. The wallet integrates Loopring's L2 DEX natively, giving users a seamless DeFi experience within the same interface.

As one of DeFi's earliest and most established zkRollup protocols, Loopring has been independently audited multiple times and has processed hundreds of billions in cumulative transaction value. The protocol is fully open-source, and its ZK circuit designs have contributed to the broader knowledge base underlying Ethereum's ZK scaling ecosystem.
