Curve Finance is the definitive decentralized exchange for stablecoins and pegged assets, founded in 2020 by Michael Egorov, a Russian physicist-turned-DeFi architect. Curve's core innovation is the StableSwap invariant, a specialized AMM algorithm that dramatically reduces slippage when trading assets that should maintain near-equal values — such as USDC/USDT/DAI, stETH/ETH, or various wrapped Bitcoin variants. While a standard AMM would impose steep price impact on large stablecoin swaps, Curve's algorithm keeps prices nearly flat until liquidity is almost entirely consumed.

The 3pool (comprising USDC, USDT, and DAI) became one of DeFi's most foundational liquidity pools, handling billions in daily stablecoin volume with minimal slippage. By locking CRV for up to four years in exchange for veCRV, holders gain boosted LP rewards (up to 2.5×) and the power to direct CRV emissions toward specific liquidity pools through weekly gauge weight votes. This created massive incentives for protocols to accumulate veCRV — either directly or through third-party platforms like Convex Finance — to attract liquidity for their stablecoin or pegged assets.

Curve has processed over a trillion dollars in cumulative trading volume since inception and consistently ranks among the top protocols by total value locked (TVL), often exceeding $5 billion. The protocol is deployed on Ethereum mainnet as well as Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Fantom, Avalanche, and several other chains, with liquidity concentrated wherever Curve's stablecoin infrastructure is most needed.
